BLWYDDYN 6 Mrs Edwards

What has been happening in Blwyddyn Chwech this week?

12th June 2025

This week, Blwyddyn Chwech have been putting themselves into the role of traders buying and selling goods along the Silk Road.  Using a range of numeracy skills, geographical skills and digital skills, the learners displayed critical thinking and resilience as they planned journeys according to the demand of products, sourced commodities and converted currencies.  In addition, they have learned about the shared values of the Abrahamic faiths and debated which of the nine values should go where in a 'Diamond 9' activity.  Furthermore, they have been working well as a team to practise their play and help ensure that Sports Day ran smoothly, providing plenty of support for each other and younger learners.  Da iawn pawb!

16th May 2025

As Blwyddyn 6 look ahead to their residential, they have had another busy week!  In Maths, they have revisited ratio and proportion, deepening their understanding through problem-solving and reasoning.  Swapping the dusty deserts of Arabia, for the misty mountains of Monmouthshire, learners have been brushing up on a wide range of literacy skills in their Quest Tale writing.  In thematic work, pupils have been busy learning about the Early Islamic Civilisation and the Silk Road, demonstrating their chronology skills and exploring digital mapping.

9th May 2025

This week, Blwyddyn 6 have been focusing on literacy skills to bring a character to life in their writing whilst in Maths, learners have been getting to grips with fractions, decimals and percentage equivalences.  In Science, the class have worked hard on their understanding of variables, through the introduction of 3 new scientific 'buddies', the 'V-Gang: Ivy, Colin and Dash!'  On Friday, they applied this learning to a practical investigation, alongside learning to use new (and highly confusing) vocabulary i.e. solute, solution, solvent, soluble etc.  Pupils ably led the 80th VE Day commemoration assembly on Thursday and enjoyed a visit from the police to talk about online safety.

2nd May 2025

With a very busy term ahead, Blwyddyn 6 have come back into school and hit the ground running, diving straight into our topic 'One Thousand and One Nights: A Voyage Into the Wonders of the Middle East'.  Learners have got to grips with the location of the Middle East region and identified many of the countries and capital cities, as well as learning about how the population of this area has greatly changed over the past few decades; they have also started looking at the geometric style of Islamic Art.  In Maths, Blwyddyn 6 have created bar charts and line graphs and interpreted data from pie charts.  In Literacy learners have begun immersing themselves into the dust and heat of Agrabah as they develop their skills in Quest Tale writing.

11th April 2025

Blwddyn Chwech's final week of their penultimate term at Raglan has been a busy one, showcasing their excellent teamwork at the Cluster Netball & Football tournament, where they did themselves and the school proud.  Furthermore, learners have been digging deeper into their understanding of Financial Literacy, learning about managing money, online and offline scams, 'good' and 'bad' debt and ethical spending.  Learners have also been busy collaborating and working independently to construct a 'Steady Hand Buzzer Game', including electrical circuitry before testing and evaluating their products against the design brief.  Pasg Hapus pawb!

4th March 2025

Following last week's deep dive into multiplication, this week Blwyddyn Chwech have been consolidating their understanding of using different methods to divide whole numbers and decimals by two digits.  After producing their own version of WW2 propaganda posters, learners have been analysing President Trump's social media posts to consider whether they are reliable or unreliable!  As we approach the Christian celebration of Easter, pupils have also been researching celebrations that other religions hold around the same time of year and were surprised by how many there are!! The class also enjoyed an iSing workshop which introduced the songs that they will sing at their Leavers' Service in St Woolos towards the end of next term.

28th March 2025

This week, Blwyddyn Chwech have been getting to grips with the technicalities of creating a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' Story using Canva and Google Slides.  This has involved creating a branching diagram to show the different pathways that the character of Macbeth could have taken (had he made different choices), creating backdrops on Canva then uploading them into Google Slides and adding hyperlinks so that the story functions correctly.  It's been quite a challenge, but all of the learners have learnt new ICT skills in this creative, cross-curricular task.  They have also been writing Discussion Texts following their learning about Macbeth and really drilling down into formal written methods in multiplication, developing understanding and fluency, as well as building confidence.

21st March 2025

Another busy week has flown by in Blwyddyn 6, with learners enthralled by the conclusion of the Shakespearean tragedy, 'Macbeth', having collated evidence along the way to begin our discussion text next week - 'Macbeth: Hero or Villain?'  In Maths, the class have been getting to grips with converting metric measure, which has been challenging, but they have persevered!  Learners were also delighted by a visit from former children's laureate on Tuesday, Connor Allen, who spent an hour with them developing their poetry skills.  Following our learning about the origins of WW2 last week, the class learnt about the positive and negative uses of propaganda during the war, before having a go at creating their own posters on Adobe or Canva.  We also revised our knowledge of symbols in electrical circuits before investigating the effects of adding more bulbs to a circuit whilst maintainin the voltage.

14th March 2025

Blwyddyn 6 have enjoyed another busy week, delving into the dark tragedy of Macbeth and stretching their vocabulary muscles, challenging themselves by attempting a Guinness World Record event in clog dancing and working hard to  consolidate their understanding of 3D shape. Learners also had a wonderful World Book Day, exploring real world data linking to gender stereotyping and celebrating difference. Bendigedig pawb!
