What has been happening in Blwyddyn Un this week?
14.03.25
Blwyddyn 1 have had an incredible week! We kicked off British Science Week with a Farm Live Lesson from the NFU, learning all about the daily chores that take place on a farm. The highlight of our week was our fantastic school trip to St Dials Farm, where we had a wonderful day being farmers! We met and fed animals, explored the machinery and found out how they plant, grow and harvest crops. In maths, we revisited place value and in literacy we wrote a recount of our trip. We also explored our World Book Day text, ‘Dogs Don’t Do Ballet’ composing “what if” sentences. A visit from Louby Lou had us discovering fascinating mini beasts, and in RE we explored the Easter Story.

This week in Blwyddyn Un, we have been busy exploring data in Maths, extracting information from bar charts, inputting it into tables, and creating our own bar charts on J2E. We also answered questions comparing the data from Ben and Bertie’s farms. In Literacy, we continued our World Book Day diversity-themed text, using adjectives to describe Biff’s feelings and completing reading comprehension tasks. The children also wrote thoughtful and encouraging letters to Biff. We had a fantastic visit to Messy Church, where we discovered the story of Matthew through crafts and planting activities. In Science and Technology, we explored hedgerow habitats, learning about the wildlife that lives there. We have also had the best time this week getting creative, using our new make do construction kits!
28.03.25
This week in Blwyddyn Un, we have been busy exploring measuring in Maths, using centimetres to measure different items, ordering caterpillars from shortest to tallest, and working on fact families with “If I know… then I know…” statements. In Literacy, we began our new class text, The Beeman, learning about the role of a beekeeper, labelling their clothing, and creating our own Bee Pledges. In RE, we explored our school value of courage, reflecting on how we have shown courage and how Jesus demonstrated it in the Easter Story. In Science and Technology, we investigated the life cycle of a bee, and in Welsh, we learned farm animal names. We also developed our football skills in PE and got creative in Expressive Arts, crafting special gifts for Mother’s Day!
04.04.25
This week in Dosbarth Un, we have been busy developing our mental maths skills, calculating 1 more, 1 less, 2 more, and 2 less, as well as solving subtraction problems linked to bees. In Literacy, we worked collaboratively to research and gather facts about bees and beekeepers, using skimming and scanning skills to construct sections of a non-chronological report. In Science, we began an exciting plant growth investigation, comparing Lucozade vs water to see which helps radish plants grow faster. We explored fair testing, controlled and independent variables, and made our own predictions. In Expressive Arts, we created our own bees and honeycomb, and in Health and Well-being, we discussed ways to care for insects and animals. We also continued developing our ball skills. On Friday, we had an incredible Outdoor Learning Day, completing a carousel of activities across Plaza 1—toasting marshmallows, building dens, exploring habitats, and even camouflaging! So much fun was had by all!
11.04.25
This week in Blwyddyn 1 have been busy using our digital skills in literacy to type up our non-chronological reports all about bees. We also completed our phonics and high-frequency word assessments, finding out how much progress we’ve made this term! In maths, we explored 3D shapes, going on a shape hunt around the school and outdoor areas to spot them in real life. We have also investigated which flowers attract bees the most, linking beautifully to our theme. In health and well-being, we focused on friendship, discussing what makes a good friend and sharing thoughtful compliments with one another. We ended the term with a movie afternoon treat, won for us by the lovely Ava! A perfect finish to a brilliant term!
02.05.25
Blwyddyn 1 have begun an exciting new class theme - Globetrotters! We started by exploring the text "We all went on safari”, learning about safari animals, writing animal descriptions, counting in Swahili, spotting rhyming words and creating our own “My Safari Adventure” poems - both individually and as a class. In maths, we’ve been making connections as we explored repeated addition, doubling and an introduction to multiplication. We also explored how multiplication is linked to grouping and began recognising patterns in the 2s, 5s and 10s times tables. The children showed brilliant resilience and reasoning when solving problems involving equal groups and repeated addition. Da iawn Pawb!
09.05.25
This week in Dosbarth Un, we have been busy building on our maths skills by exploring repeated addition, using dot patterns, and writing multiplication sentences. We also applied this knowledge when working with money, using coins to represent multiplication in real-life contexts. In Literacy, we began exploring our new class text "We’re Going on a Lion Hunt". We focused on onomatopoeia and how sound words can enhance our descriptions and make our writing more exciting and engaging. In RE, we have started learning about Judaism, exploring some of the key beliefs and traditions. In Humanities, we’ve continued to learn about Kenya, looking closely at its climate and comparing it to our own. We discussed what we would need to pack for a trip there and gave reasons for our choices—thinking carefully about the weather and environment. In Expressive Arts, we’ve been enjoying African dancing, using rhythm and movement to express ourselves. In PE, we’ve taken part in a range of team games and skill-based activities, building cooperation and coordination.
16.05.25
This week in Dosbarth Un, we have been busy planning and beginning to write our own versions of “We’re Going on a Lion Hunt”. We focused on creating exciting character and setting descriptions, changing the main characters, animals, and locations. We used onomatopoeia to bring our stories to life and enhance the journey across the different landscapes. In Maths, we have been counting in 10s, adding multiples of 10, and representing amounts using 10s. We also linked this to money, using our knowledge to buy items and calculate totals. In Science, we explored animal habitats within the African Savannah, learning how different animals adapt and survive in their environments. Through, Humanities we have been exploring our rights, and what they are. In Health and well-being we’ve started practising for Sports Day, focusing on teamwork, agility and coordination. In Expressive Arts, we’ve been creating beautiful sunset artwork, blending warm colours and silhouettes to reflect the African landscape.

This week in Dosbarth Un, we have been busy writing our own “We’re Going on a… Hunt” stories in Literacy. We focused on character and setting descriptions, changing the main characters, setting, and animals, and used onomatopoeia to bring our imaginative landscapes to life. In Maths, we have been learning all about time. We recapped o’clock and half past, and began exploring quarter past and quarter to, using both analogue clocks and practical activities to support our learning. In Science, we investigated animal diets within the African Savannah. We learned about carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores, and sorted different animals using Venn diagrams. In PE, we’ve continued practising for Sports Day, building our stamina and teamwork skills. Through Humanities, we explored schools in Africa and compared them to our own. We had some brilliant discussions, and it really made us reflect on how fortunate we are. In Expressive Arts, we completed our sunset artwork, using colour blending and silhouette techniques to capture the beauty of the African landscape.
