What have we been getting up to in Dosbarth Derbyn?

We began our week with an exciting trip to the local livestock market, where the children had a fantastic opportunity to learn all about farming and agriculture in our community. They were fascinated to watch the sheep being sold and experience first-hand what an auctioneer does—what a unique experience! We also enjoyed a delicious lunch together at the market, making it a truly memorable day. We also visited the community café, where we joined in a creative activity making colourful minibeast masks with the lovely people who attend the café. It was heart-warming to see so many smiles and hear the room filled with laughter—such a joyful moment of connection. Back in class, we’ve continued our learning around The Very Hungry Caterpillar, exploring the days of the week and creating our own sentences inspired by the story. The children have shown fantastic creativity and are growing in confidence with their writing. To top it off, we’ve started preparing to grow our very own herb gardens—watch this space to see how our green fingers get on!

This week, Reception were thrilled to receive a special fruit delivery inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar! The children enjoyed tasting a variety of fruits and used some fantastic adjectives to describe how each one looked, felt, and tasted. We then put our super safe cooking skills to the test by creating our very own colourful and tasty fruit salads—what a delicious treat! In Maths, we’ve been busy role-playing in our flower shop. The children have loved choosing bunches of flowers and using their counting skills to find the total cost—great real-life maths in action. In Forest School, our focus turned to nature. We’ve been sorting minibeasts into different groups and exploring the different parts of a flower through hands-on investigation. A wonderful week of sensory learning, creativity, and curiosity!

This week, we had a fantastic topic immersion day to launch our new theme: Where Does Green Come From? The children enjoyed a creative art day where they made spider webs by threading, painted spiders, and explored symmetry by creating beautiful butterfly paintings. As part of our literacy focus, we wrote about minibeasts, using descriptive language and full sentences to bring our writing to life. In maths, we have been busy sorting British coins and developing our understanding of their value through fun, hands-on activities. As well as, using imaginations to make bug hotels, using different criteria to sort minibeasts and creating a tally on a minibeast hunt!
